Morrow, 35, was attempting to make a comeback after two injury-plagued seasons in Chicago. He had rejoined the Cubs on a minor league deal in the offseason.
The release of Morrow came as no surprise, as Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein mentioned recently that he didn't expect Morrow to contribute to the team in 2020 and wished him the best.
Morrow had a strong first half of 2018 before injuries derailed him. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in November 2018. He also had a hydrodissection procedure to decompress a nerve in July 2019, a setback in his comeback attempt. After he was shut down last August, he then had nerve decompression surgery last September.
Morrow appeared in 35 games in his Cubs tenure, none of them coming after July 2018.
