"Due to the uncertainty of fall sports in the state of Illinois, I will be finishing my education at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, beginning the summer of 2020," McCarthy wrote.
The IHSA canceled all spring sports in March as the coronavirus outbreak spread. Florida's high school sports also shut down in March. As of now, neither state has committed to holding high school athletics in the fall or made plans for schools to reopen, but Florida has had fewer restrictions than Illinois amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Florida has officially opened its arms for professional sports to return, governor Ron DeSantis said last week, though without fans in attendance. Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker has expressed a desire for sports to return in his state as well, pending approval of safe plans.
"I want to see sports play," Pritzker said earlier in May, referencing a return for the summer or fall. "I think it's good for everybody. I think they can do it here in Illinois. Especially if you look at the timetable, there's a high likelihood they could do it within a timetable that we're hoping to be able to reopen many businesses."
McCarthy is a four-star prospect, according to Rivals. He guided Nazareth Academy to the IHSA 7A state championship game in each of the last two years, winning the title in 2018.
