(670 The Score) Cubs reliever Carl Edwards Jr. was the recipient of racist messages on Instagram recently, which sparked an MLB investigation into the matter, the Athletic reported.

Though Edwards is currently pitching at Triple-A Iowa, news had quickly spread to Cubs manager Joe Maddon on Tuesday. As Edwards goes through the ugly incident, Maddon reminded that supporting him and listening to him are the most important steps the organization can take.

"I haven't spoken to Carl about this yet specifically and I need to," Maddon said on the Laurence Holmes Show on Tuesday. "I was not aware of it when it actually did occur. What I probably would do is just listen. Listen to the player and at that point really try to advise him and understand that that I think is a vocal minority that's going to say those kinds of things. I also believe in people throwing stuff out there like that is just for a reaction, because they can.

"You have to understand that it is a minority, it's not a majority. I really believe that sincerely. He has to know that he has our full support in dealing with all of this.

"It's so easy for people to put things out there right now that can be commented upon. I think this is possibly a classic situation of that. Carl's got our support. He knows that. Listen, I love this boy. We just have to talk, listen to him and help him work his way through it."

The 27-year-old Edwards was sent to Triple-A Iowa after posting a 32.40 ERA in four appearances for the Cubs early in the first week of the season. He has a 2.25 ERA in four innings with the Iowa Cubs.
