Bears defense shines, offense is up and down in joint practice with Dolphins

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) Throughout training camp, it has been clear that the Bears' defense is well ahead of their offense. That unit is also ahead of the Dolphins' offense.

The Bears' defense shined during a joint practice with the Dolphins on Friday at Halas Hall. Chicago's defense had several takeaways against Miami's starting offense, including interceptions from safety Jaquan Brisker, safety Kevin Byard and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

It continued a strong training camp for the Bears' defense, which looks to be improved under the watch of new coordinator Dennis Allen.

"If we play like we practiced today, we're going to be pretty good," Byard said.

The Bears' offense endured ups and downs during practice against the Dolphins' defense. Quarterback Caleb Williams had some highlights, including touchdown passes to receiver Olamide Zaccheaus and tight end Colston Loveland. Williams also took several sacks — plays that were blown dead before contact — and threw an interception to linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Williams and most of the Bears' starters won't play in the preseason opener against the Dolphins on Sunday at Soldier Field. Coach Ben Johnson preferred to let his starters get their work in Friday.

The practice Friday featured several fights, which are commonplace during joint work. Though Johnson warned his players against altercations, they still occurred against a new opponent.

Byard and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson were involved with Dolphins receiver Dee Eskridge. There was also a scuffle between two Dolphins players during a drill.

"This is our field, this is our home," Byard said. "If they want to turn up, they can turn up."
