LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- After having weekly rotating captains for the last four years under former coach Matt Nagy, the Bears have voted on and named full-season captains for 2022.
The Bears selected quarterback Justin Fields, linebacker Roquan Smith, guard Cody Whitehair and defensive end Robert Quinn as their four captains for this season. The team will also have one weekly honorary captain, coach Matt Eberflus said. The four captains were selected by the Bears' players.
"That says a lot about these guys and what their peers think of them," Eberflus said Wednesday.
Eberflus’ choice on captaincy is a departure from the approach of Nagy, who believed in making the selection of captains a weekly recognition rather than a symbol of leadership.
The Bears’ honorary captain for their opener against the 49ers this Sunday is running back David Montgomery. That game will kick off at noon CT from Soldier Field.
