(670 The Score) While a national narrative swirls about whether the Bears would be wise to select a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, former star quarterback and current FOX Sports analyst Michael Vick has joined many in expressing a strong belief in current Chicago quarterback Justin Fields.

Vick believes the Bears should use their draft capital to build around the 23-year-old Fields and see through his future in Chicago rather than using the top selection to find his replacement.

“That would be a wasted draft pick,” Vick told the Marquee Sports Network. "That would be a waste of a draft pick to go get a quarterback. You got a quarterback.

“In today’s game, all you want to do is win. To not look at bringing in one of the top receivers in the draft or going and getting one of the top offensive linemen in the draft would be a huge mistake. I’ll just say that. Keep it simple. It would be a huge mistake. Catastrophic.

“I just think the ceiling is high.”

Fields completed 60.4% of his passes for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding 160 carries for 1,143 yards and eight rushing scores in the 2022 season. He surpassed Vick’s mark of 1,036 rushing yards from 2006 with the Falcons, a figure that once stood as the single-season rushing record for a quarterback before it was broken by Ravens star Lamar Jackson during his MVP season in 2019, when he rushed for 1,206 yards.

Fields also surpassed Vick’s quarterback record of 173 rushing yards in a single regular-season game when he rushed for 178 yards against the Dolphins on Nov. 6 at Soldier Field. Former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick holds the single-game quarterback rushing record for any game, compiling 181 yards in a playoff game in January 2013.

“He’s a great player,” Vick said of Fields. “I think Justin has a lot of room to grow. As a quarterback and in general, but growing in the passing game. Another year in the system, some weapons around you.

“You should be looking to build around him now.”
