Mike Florio: Bears are just leverage for Eagles in Carson Wentz trade sweepstakes

"I think it's just the Colts," Florio says of the serious suitors for Wentz.

(670 The Score) In recent weeks, the growing belief across the NFL has been that the Eagles would trade quarterback Carson Wentz to either the Bears or the Colts. Now, it seems Indianapolis could be the lone suitor in the sweepstakes.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk and NBC Sports believes the Bears aren't seriously in play for Wentz, who would prefer a trade to the Colts.

"I've always thought that the Bears were just the leverage for (the Eagles to get more from) the Colts," Florio said on the Bernstein & Rahimi Show on Wednesday morning. "Because the Eagles have no real leverage coming from the notion of, 'We'll just keep Carson Wentz.' So you have to have a second team to get the Colts to give more.

"I think it's just the Colts, and I really do believe that number one, Carson Wentz should not want the pressure, the scrutiny and the stress of playing for the Bears, especially because everybody's jobs will be riding on his performance. And number two, if Wentz doesn't want the Bears, there's no way the Bears should want him. You want your franchise quarterback to be all in.

"If Wentz is hesitant, I don't know that you want to try to talk Wentz into playing for the Bears."

The No. 2 overall pick in 2016, Wentz struggled in completing 57.4% of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over 12 games in 2020. He was eventually benched by the Eagles in favor of Jalen Hurts, the team's second-round pick in 2020.

The Bears have a vacancy at quarterback after allowing Mitchell Trubisky, the No. 2 overall pick in 2017, to become an unrestricted free agent. The Colts' opening at quarterback came after the retirement of Philip Rivers, who was their starter last season.
