The Dallas Cowboys will have a new head coach in 2025.
Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Cowboys were unable to come to terms on a new deal, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday, making McCarthy free to pursue other opportunities.
The Cowboys had an exclusive negotiating window until Tuesday to find a resolution on an extension with McCarthy, and the sides took their time to explore their opportunities moving forward, with Dallas even denying an interview request from the Chicago Bears for McCarthy.
Ultimately, the two couldn't come to terms on the length of a new deal and decided to go their separate ways, Pelissero reported.
The Bears and Saints are both expected to be interested in McCarthy now that he's free to talk to other teams, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. The Bears have already interviewed eight candidates as they continue to cast a wide net in their coaching search.
McCarthy ends his Dallas Cowboys tenure with a 49-35 record, including three-straight 12-5 seasons from 2021-'23 and two NFC East crowns. He was also 1-3 in the playoffs in Dallas as the Cowboys failed to advance past the divisional round.
