(670 The Score) Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael will be immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend, which will mark the culmination of a long journey to this storied recognition.
McMichael’s upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame is especially meaningful given his ongoing battle with ALS, a devastating neurological disorder for which there's no known cure. McMichael won't travel to Canton this weekend, but his family, friends and former Bears teammates are eager to celebrate the occasion and he'll be honored at his home.
“It really is remarkable,” Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, one of McMichael’s former Bears teammates, told the Mully & Haugh Show on Thursday morning. “It's a tremendous story. And I’m just really excited for him, I'm excited for his family. Everything Steve has been a part of all this time, it’s a tremendous honor.
“If I had to think of one word: consistency. He was always there, whether he was hurt – I don’t care what the situation was. It was very difficult to get him to come out of the game for any reason at all. Very unselfish. Tremendous teammate.”
McMichael will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame alongside Bears greats Devin Hester and Julius Peppers in this class. McMichael was selected as a senior candidate to Canton.
Singletary was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998.
