(670 The Score) As the Colts made a significant splash at the trade deadline by acquiring star cornerback Sauce Gardner from the Jets on Tuesday, the Bears made more of a ripple. They acquired defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka in a trade with the Browns.
The Bears sent a sixth-round pick back to the Browns and netted Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick in return. It wasn’t a major move for Chicago, but that doesn’t mean general manager Ryan Poles wasn’t trying for one.
“All I can say is we made calls across the league,” Poles told reporters Wednesday. “And I check up on all of the guys you would imagine just to see the availability. You get different answers. Sometimes they change if you start three weeks prior as you get closer things come up and down based on how teams are doing and how they feel about the player. Sometimes they go to the player and ask him, how do they see the future and go from there. We turned pretty much every stone to find those answers.”
The Bears had a need to improve their pass rush. The top options available were Raiders star defensive end Maxx Crosby and Bengals star defensive end Trey Hendrickson, but neither player was traded.
The Bears instead landed Tryon-Shoyinka, a first-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2021 who has 15 sacks in five NFL seasons. Chicago placed defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo (torn Achilles) on injured reserve Tuesday, which opened a roster spot for Tryon-Shoyinka.
The Bears (5-3) will host the Giants (2-7) on Sunday at Soldier Field.
