Cubs' Craig Counsell doesn't linger on Pete Crow-Armstrong's mental lapse: 'We make mistakes, we're human'

(670 The Score) During a four-run fourth inning for the Cardinals on Tuesday in St. Louis, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong caught the second out of the inning on a deep fly ball and held onto the ball for a couple seconds. He falsely believed it was the third out of the inning.

As Crow-Armstrong idled with the baseball, Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn ran from second base all the way home to score on the play. It gave the Cardinals an 8-5 lead at the time – with the additional run looming large in the Cubs’ eventual 8-7 loss.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell kept Crow-Armstrong in the game and doesn't plan to take any disciplinary measure.

“It’s just a mistake,” Counsell told the Spiegel & Holmes Show on Wednesday. “It’s just a mistake. That’s all, it’s a mistake. We don’t want to make mistakes. Nobody wants to make mistakes. Pete doesn’t want to make mistakes. (But) we make mistakes, we’re human. If you think there is a reason of why he would make those mistakes again, we’ll try to figure out a way to coach it better and we’ll try to figure out a way to help Pete. I don’t. It was a mistake that was made. You live with it. We’re not perfect.”

Counsell texted with Crow-Armstrong on Tuesday night following the game, looking to check on him after a difficult game.

The Cubs and Cardinals play the third game of their series Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. from Busch Stadium. The game can be heard on 670 The Score and the Audacy app. Pregame coverage starts at 6:10 p.m.
