Craig Counsell: Pete Crow-Armstrong's breakout All-Star season has been 'special' to watch

(670 The Score) Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is enjoying a breakout season in 2025, recording 23 home runs, 67 RBIs and 27 stolen bases while posting an .850 OPS in 90 games. He has emerged as a star for the Cubs, and his performance has been recognized as he was elected an All-Star starter.

On the Spiegel & Holmes Show on Wednesday, Cubs manager Craig Counsell explained why he’s so thrilled for Crow-Armstrong.

“Any time you have a young player and then this happens so quickly here for Pete, just to see kind of what he’s done the last two months, it’s been special,” Counsell said. “This has been a quick rise with Pete, and it’s been fun. What he’s done this year, it’s just been a joy to watch – and I think for fans of baseball, it’s been a joy. So, it’s fun. We get to watch Pete every day. It’s been a thrill. And the All-Star Game is just one nod for Pete, like, ‘You’re doing great things.’ The beauty of sports is the challenge gets thrown at you the next day of (to) do it again. But hopefully next week in Atlanta, he gets to enjoy a couple days and soak it all in.”

The Cubs acquired Crow-Armstrong in a trade with the Mets back in 2021, sending shortstop Javier Baez and right-hander Trevor Williams to New York. Crow-Armstrong broke into the big leagues with the Cubs late in the 2023 season.

Coincidentally, Crow-Armstrong and Baez – who's now a center fielder with the Tigers – are expected to start at that position on opposite sides in the All-Star Game, which will be played next Tuesday in Atlanta.

Before then, the Cubs have to finish their first-half schedule. The Cubs and Twins will meet Wednesday evening in the second game of their three-game series in Minneapolis. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. CT. The game can be heard on 670 The Score and the Audacy app, with pregame coverage starting at 6:05 p.m.
