Cubs activate SS Nico Hoerner, place C Yan Gomes on injured list


(670 The Score) The Cubs have activated shortstop Nico Hoerner from the injured list and placed catcher Yan Gomes (oblique) on the injured list.

Hoerner suffered a right ankle sprain and was placed on the injured list on May 15, retroactive to May 12. He was hitting .271 at the time of his injury. The Cubs are starting Andrelton Simmons at shortstop for Wednesday's night's game against the Reds.

Gomes is hitting .247 on the season. The Cubs recalled catcher P.J. Higgins last Sunday from Triple-A Iowa. He is starting at catcher for Wednesday's game. Willson Contreras, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, is available off the bench.

The Cubs and Reds play their third game of a four-game series Wednesday night at Great American Ballpark.
