(670 The Score) The Cubs added outfielder Billy Hamilton to the active roster and optioned designated hitter/outfielder Jose Martinez to their alternate camp in South Bend, they announced Tuesday.
The Cubs claimed Hamilton off waivers from the Mets on Monday. He’ll be available when the Cubs host the Reds on Tuesday evening.
Hamilton was added primarily because of his speed and defensive ability. Hamilton is a career .241 hitter who has 302 stolen bases across eight MLB seasons. Hamilton struggled mightily at the plate for the Mets this season, hitting .045 (1-of-22) and a .129 OPS in 17 games.
The Cubs acquired Martinez from the Rays on Aug. 30. He has since gone hitless in 14 at-bats for Chicago. Martinez is hitting .198 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 30 games for the season.
