David Ross on Jordan Wicks: 'He’s just wired the right way'

(670 The Score) Cubs left-hander Jordan Wicks had quite the MLB debut Saturday, throwing five innings of one-run ball while striking out nine in Chicago’s 10-6 win at Pittsburgh.

Of course, it didn’t start off smoothly, as Wicks allowed a lead-off homer and the first three Pirates to reach base before he struck out the next three batters in his first MLB inning. That ability to respond to early adversity was what impressed Cubs manager David Ross the most about Wicks.

“It was great, it was great,” Ross said Tuesday on the Bernstein & Holmes Show. “Really poised. To get kind of punched in the face there in your first big league outing in that first inning and have first and second, having already given up a homer, a line drive right by you from (Bryan) Reynolds right over your head, he settles in. (Andrew) McCutchen didn’t swing, didn’t chase and all of a sudden Tommy (Hottovy) makes a really nice mound visit. He’s just wired the right way mentally. I think that’s why we were comfortable bringing him up here. He seems like a guy that has a lot of poise and you saw within that moment him gather himself and start punching tickets after that and was really clean the rest of the game.”
