(670 The Score) Cubs manager David Ross was displeased by infielder Nick Madrigal’s egregious baserunning blunder in the team’s 10-1 win against the Athletics on Monday but added the club will move past the gaffe quickly.

With the Cubs leading 3-1 with one out and runners on second and third in the top of the fourth inning, second baseman Nico Hoerner singled to left field to score catcher Yan Gomes for a 4-1 lead. Madrigal, who started on second on the play, then ran through third-base coach Willie Harris’ stop sign and was easily thrown out at home plate for the second out of the inning.

Madrigal was quick to issue an apology for the mental mistake, manager David Ross said.

“These are grown men, they know when they make a mistake,” Ross said during an interview with Laurence Holmes and Leila Rahimi on Tuesday afternoon. “They know when they mess up. Nick was the first one to run by me and apologize and walk up to Willie and apologize. Sometimes you see things late and you figure that you just got to go. That’s just part of the game.
These guys aren’t perfect. We want to put them in this box that they don’t make any mistakes and they don’t mess up. And they do. And part of it is just that we’re going to stick together. We’re all going to make mistakes. I’m going to mess up. Nick’s going to mess up. Belli (Cody Bellinger) is going to mess up. Ian Happ is going to mess up. Dansby (Swanson) is going to mess up. They’re all going to have moments of, ‘I wish I would’ve done something different’ or ‘I didn’t see this’ or ‘I made this mistake.’ That’s going to go throughout a season. The good teams move on, learn from those mistakes and try not to let them happen again. Nothing needs to be said to Nick Madrigal. He’s a grown man and understands that he ran through a stop sign and got thrown out by a long ways and made a mistake. We’ll move on to tomorrow. He’ll be back in there real soon playing and helping us win baseball games. Nothing needs to be said. We known when we mess up.”
