(670 The Score) The Cubs on Tuesday designated reliever Hector Neris for assignment.
Neris already cleared waivers and will be released, according to reports. The 35-year-old Neris has had a rocky initial season in Chicago, posting a 3.89 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. He converted 17 of his 22 save chances.
Neris had made 46 appearances for the Cubs. Had he reached 60 appearances, the $9-million team option for 2025 on his contract would’ve transformed into a player option. By parting ways now with Neris, the Cubs ensured he won’t be on their books for 2025.
In Neris’ place, the Cubs promoted reliever Jack Neely from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs recently acquired Neely in a trade with the Yankees.
