(670 The Score) Cubs ace Justin Steele will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured left elbow, manager Craig Counsell announced Sunday.
It wasn't immediately clear whether Steele will undergo Tommy John surgery or a primary repair, ESPN reported, though the Cubs have ruled out Steele for the remainder of the season. He was placed on the injured list Wednesday with elbow tendinitis.
Steele had a 3-1 record and 4.76 ERA over four starts this season. He threw seven shutout innings in the Cubs' 7-0 win over the Rangers on Monday.
Steele has a career 3.30 ERA over 102 appearances and emerged as the Cubs' staff ace. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017. The team will turn to veteran right-hander Colin Rea to fill Steele's spot in the rotation.
The Cubs and Dodgers will play their series finale Sunday evening in Los Angeles. First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. CT at Dodger Stadium. Pregame coverage will start at 5:35 p.m. CT on 670 The Score and the Audacy app.
