(670 The Score) Just when the Cubs’ struggling offense broke out in a big way Saturday, the team encountered a new problem Sunday.
Staff ace Kyle Hendricks now has the dubious distinction of being the first pitcher in franchise history to allow four homers in the first inning of a game, according to ESPN Stats & Info. It was the Braves who did the damage against Hendricks, with first baseman Freddie Freeman, catcher Travis d’Arnaud, second baseman Ehire Adrianza and center fielder Guillermo Heredia all taking Hendricks deep in the first inning at Wrigley Field.
Hendricks became just the ninth pitcher in MLB history to allow four homers in the first inning of a game, according to ESPN Stats & Info. The Braves led 6-0 after the top of the first. It was the first time the Braves hit four homers in the first inning of a game since 2003, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN.
The Cubs ended up losing 13-4, dropping to 6-9. Hendricks went four innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out two.
"I was just not very good from the start," Hendricks said afterward. "I was falling behind guys and not very aggressive. My pitches were just flat. I was able to make a little adjustment. I just need to get back to work. I have a lot to work on going forward."
