The Cubs have placed outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, they announced before their Tuesday evening game against the Cardinals.
The Cubs selected the contract of infielder Hernan Perez from their alternate camp in South Bend in a corresponding move.
In another health concern, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant got a shot in his ailing wrist after seeing a specialist Tuesday morning, manager David Ross said, and will miss at least the next three games – the contest Tuesday and then the Cubs’ doubleheader against the Cardinals on Wednesday. The Cubs’ hope is that Bryant can return when they host the White Sox on Friday evening.
"As much as we don't talk about those things, I've seen too many great players not have great years because they're dealing with small issues,” Ross said on the Laurence Holmes Show on Tuesday afternoon. “Those things tend to linger. You create bad habits really fast trying to make up for something that might be bothering you or that's giving you a little bit of pause in your approach or your play. I just don't want that for my guys. I'd rather take some time, get 100% healthy, make sure they're in a good head space with no hesitation and be able to go out there and play freely."
Bryant has struggled in this truncated season, hitting .177 with two homers, four RBIs and a .594 OPS in 14 games.
Souza, 31, is hitting .190 (4-of-21) with one homer and five RBIs in nine games.
Perez is a career .252 hitter across parts of eight MLB seasons with the Tigers and Brewers. He hit .228 with eight homers and 18 RBIs in 91 games for the Brewers in 2019.
To make room for Perez on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred reliever Brad Wieck to the 45-day injured list.
