(670 The Score) The Cubs released right-hander Colin Rea late Monday night, the Tribune reported.

Rea, 30, was in line to compete for the No. 5 spot in the Cubs’ rotation, which lacks depth after Jose Quintana, Jon Lester and Tyler Chatwood hit free agency and after the team’s recent trade of Yu Darvish to the Padres. Rea has a 4.79 ERA in 35 appearances in an MLB career that dates back to 2015. That included him posting a 5.79 ERA in nine appearances, including two starts, for the Cubs in the shortened 2020 season.

The Cubs released Rea so that he could pursue a professional opportunity in Japan, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported.
