(670 The Score) Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay will undergo Tommy John surgery sometime in the coming days, manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday.
The news didn’t come as a surprise, as the 29-year-old Alzolay had been sidelined since May by injury. Counsell and the Cubs didn’t share a specific timeline for Alzolay’s return, but he’ll miss most of the 2025 season and perhaps all of it.
After a strong 2023 campaign in which he earned the closer’s job, Alzolay opened this season in the same role but struggled from the jump. He posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 18 appearances and was just 4-of-9 in save chances.
Alzolay embarked on a rehab assignment in July but didn’t make process, necessitating further testing that revealed the need for elbow surgery.
