(670 The Score) Right-hander Trevor Williams has agreed to a one-year deal with the Cubs, according to multiple reports Saturday.
Williams, 28, is coming off a poor 2020 season, going 2-8 with a 6.18 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 11 starts for the Pirates, who designated him for assignment back in November. That marked Williams’ second straight rough season after he posted a 5.38 ERA in 26 starts for Pittsburgh in 2019. He had a 3.11 ERA in 2018 and has a career 4.43 ERA across five MLB seasons.
With at least one and probably two spots in the back end of the Cubs’ rotation open, the expectation is Williams will be in line to compete for a starting slot in spring training.
