(670 The Score) The Cubs will honor Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg by constructing a statue of him that will sit outside Wrigley Field, owner Tom Ricketts announced at Cubs Convention on Saturday morning.
Sandberg will be the fifth Cubs player to be honored with a statue, joining Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo and Fergie Jenkins. Sandberg was “caught off guard” to learn of the news, he told the Marquee Sports Network.
“I had the pleasure to spend an hour-and-a-half with Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston last night, Andre Dawson’s here, (Rick) Sutcliffe, Lee Smith, a former teammate,” Sandberg told Marquee Sports Network. “So to have this announcement today with all those guys present in the hotel means everything to me. It’s pretty cool, because the statues that are there already, I knew all of them, know them or knew them – Harry Caray and Billy Williams and Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Fergie Jenkins. So to join them, I know them and so to be a part of that class and to be a part of Wrigley Field for the fans, it’s totally awesome.”
Sandberg played from the Cubs from 1982-’94 and 1996-’97. He was a 10-time All-Star, nine-time Gold Glove winner and the 1984 National League MVP. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.
In other news honoring their franchise legends, the team announced Friday evening that it will induct Grace and Dunston into the Cubs Hall of Fame later in 2023.
