Cubs trade reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to the Yankees

(670 The Score) The Cubs have traded reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to the Yankees in return for two prospects, the club announced Tuesday afternoon.

In return, the Cubs received Triple-A reliever Jack Neely and Double-A infielder Ben Cowles.

Leiter, 33, had a 4.21 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 39 appearances for the Cubs this season. He had a 3.50 ERA in 2023. He's under contract control through the 2026 season.

Neely, 24, had posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in nine appearances at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2024. The 6-foot-8, 245-pound Neely had a 2.90 ERA in 22 appearances at Double-A earlier this season. He was rated as the No. 22 prospect in the Yankees’ organization, according to MLB Pipeline.

Cowles, 24, was hitting .295 with nine homers, 51 RBIs and an .848 OPS in 88 games at Double-A Somerset. He was rated as the No. 29 prospect in the Yankees’ organization.
