(670 The Score) A couple days off and a trip overseas didn’t slow the Cubs’ roll.
Led by two homers from Ian Happ, the Cubs hammered Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright early and often en route to a 9-1 win against their rivals in London.
Happ opened the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the second inning, then hit another solo shot in the third inning.
The Cubs took control early with two runs in the second inning, three in the third and two in the fourth, which gave them a 7-0 lead and chased Wainwight, who went just three-plus innings and allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits.
In a hitter-friendly London Stadium that was originally constructed to host track and field events at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Cubs left-hander Justin Steele had a strong outing. He fired six innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight.
Dansby Swanson also homered for the Cubs, while Christopher Morel went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Nick Madrigal added two hits, a run and an RBI.
At the conclusion of the game, Cubs fans in attendance celebrated as their beloved “Go Cubs Go” was played.
“It’s pretty cool,” Happ said in a postgame interview on Fox. “The fans really showed up, and the atmosphere was awesome. It was a really welcoming game.”
The Cubs (37-38) have won four straight and 11 of their past 13 games. The Cubs trail the NL Central-leading Reds by 3.5 games.
“We’re just playing really good baseball,” Happ said.
