(670 The Score) Though spring training is fast approaching for the Cubs, their offseason work isn't done.
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer anticipates making more additions to the roster in the coming weeks, he told the Spiegel & Holmes Show on Friday afternoon in answering a question specifically about potentially adding to the starting rotation, to the bullpen and to the bench.
“Absolutely, we’re not done,” Hoyer said live from Cubs Convention at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Chicago. “We’ll keep on supplementing the roster and keep on looking for ways to upgrade. For better or for worse – in my opinion, for worse – these offseasons just drag out now. I mean, there’s a hundred-plus players still on the free agent market. A lot of good players.
“Yeah, there’s definitely more additions on the way before we get there.”
The Cubs made their biggest offseason addition in December as they acquired star right fielder Kyle Tucker in a trade with the Astros. The team also signed left-hander Matthew Boyd to a two-year deal in November and made several other peripheral moves to fortify the roster.
The Cubs will report for spring training on Feb. 9 and will hold their first full-squad workout five days later on Feb. 14.
The Cubs will open their season on March 18 in Tokyo against the reigning World Series champion Dodgers.
