Jed Hoyer on Seiya Suzuki's future: 'He's a really good player, I expect him to be a Cub'

(670 The Score) As trade speculation around Cubs outfielder/designated hitter Seiya Suzuki intensified Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Dallas, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer struck an even-keeled approach in addressing the topic.

“We’ve had conversations about his role, DHing, all of things, but ultimately, he’s a really good player,” Hoyer said in looking ahead to the 2025 season. “I expect him to be a Cub.”

Earlier Wednesday, news broke that the Astros had expressed interest in Suzuki as they had trade discussions with the Cubs centered on three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker. That development came a day after agent Joel Wolfe revealed that Suzuki is willing to waive his no-trade clause in the right situation while also outlining how Suzuki doesn’t want to be a full-time designated hitter, which was essentially his role for the Cubs late last season.

The 30-year-old Suzuki has two seasons left on his contract and is set to make $19 million each year. He was one of the Cubs’ most dangerous hitters in 2024, batting .283 with 21 homers, 73 RBIs and an .848 OPS.

Hoyer did acknowledge that the Cubs have had a bevy of trade conversations at the Winter Meetings.

“Trade wise, we’ve had a lot of discussions with various teams,” Hoyer said. “We’ve been less involved in free agency here. But certainly we’re very active talking to different teams about trades that can make us better.”
