(670 The Score) The Cubs are planning to hire Cleveland assistant general manager Carter Hawkins as their new general manager, the Athletic reported Wednesday.
Hawkins, 37, has spent the last 14 years working in the Cleveland organization. He rose to his assistant general manager position after starting in a scouting internship role years ago.
Hawkins would fill a role that was previously occupied by Jed Hoyer, who's now the Cubs' president of baseball operations. Hoyer was promoted last November after lead executive Theo Epstein stepped down from his position following nine years with the Cubs.
Hoyer held off on hiring a general manager last year due to limitations presented by the pandemic.
It wasn't immediately clear when the Cubs will make the hiring of Hawkins official.
