Jim Callis: White Sox should be 'elated' in landing Colson Montgomery, Wes Kath in draft

Callis believes the White Sox would've drafted Kath in the first round if Montgomery was already off the board.

(670 The Score) The White Sox selected Southridge High (Ind.) shortstop Colson Montgomery with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the MLB amateur draft Sunday evening, then followed by taking Desert Mountain High (Ariz.) third baseman Wes Kath at No. 57 in the second round Monday.

Those additions -- and particularly Kath falling to the second round -- had the White Sox excited because they likely would've taken Kath in the first round if Montgomery was off the board, MLB Pipeline analyst and draft expert Jim Callis said.

"Everybody knew the White Sox loved him and he was going to be their pick, and he was," Callis said of Montgomery. "But I really think there was a really good chance if Colson Montgomery went 21 to the Cubs, then Wes Kath would've been the White Sox first-round pick. And instead, they got Wes Kath with their second-round pick.

"If you're plotting this out five years down the road -- the White Sox obivously have good players right now on the big league club too, they're a really good team -- but you could see maybe Colson Montgomery is the shortstop of the future and Wes Kath is the third baseman of the future.

"They have to be elated. They were overjoyed to get Montgomery and they would've been really happy to get Wes Kath at 22 also."

Day 3 of the MLB amateur draft continues Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT.
