(670 The Score) – White Sox reliever Joe Kelly won the team’s fantasy football title after a curious decision by catcher Yasmani Grandal.
Kelly led Grandal by about 20 points heading into Monday Night Football on Jan. 2, when the Bills-Bengals game was suspended and then eventually cancelled entirely after a scary scene in which Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field. Grandal had Bengals star receive Ja'Marr Chase and Bengals receiver Tee Higgins left to play, but at some point in time, Grandal declined Kelly’s offer to split the pot for first place, apparently believing the game would be completed at some point and that he’d win. When it was cancelled, all the first-place winnings went to Kelly.
“Just joined the White Sox for the first season,” Kelly said on the Parkins & Spiegel Show. “I didn’t want to do it to the boys, but yeah, league champ … Here in the big leagues, we have a big entry fee, so let’s just say that dividends payoff, I did very well.”
Kelly shed more light on how the back-and-forth played out.
“I offered to give him the chance to split at one point,” Kelly said. “You know, my team beat him by 20, but he was projected to win by two points. So it was still a tossup. And then the game obviously was not played, and he lost by 20. And so it is what it is. Yaz, you had your chance and now it’s gone. So congrats on second place, Yaz.”
The entry fee into the league was five figures, Kelly said. Kelly declined to reveal the exact amount he won for first place, though he shared a ballpark idea.
“People are so sensitive nowadays, but yeah, my winnings could buy a car probably,” Kelly said.
Like a Honda Accord or an Escalade?
“It’s one of those that they give you on the Price is Right,” Kelly responded.
