(670 The Score) White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech’s season got off to a rough start Monday afternoon.

Kopech gave up five homers to the Giants, including four in what turned into a disastrous fifth inning for him and the White Sox. Kopech’s five homers allowed matched the most any pitcher in White Sox history had ever allowed in a single game, according to Chris Kamka of NBC Sports Chicago. Eddie Lopat allowed five homers on April 23, 1947 and Reynaldo Lopez allowed five on July 27, 2018, according to Kamka.

Joc Pederson homered for the Giants in the second inning, then Michael Conforto, Thairo Estrada, Mike Yastrzemski and David Villar went deep in the fifth inning.

Kopech’s final line was ugly, as he allowed seven runs, all earned, on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three. The White Sox trailed 7-0 when he exited in the fifth inning.

The record for the most homers allowed in an MLB game by a single pitcher is six. Ten pitchers have allowed that many in a game, according to Statmuse.
