Right-hander Mike Clevinger has agreed to a deal to join the White Sox, pending a physical, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reported Sunday afternoon. The contract is for one year and worth more than $8 million, Jon Morosi of the MLB Network reported.

Clevinger, who will turn 32 in December, was 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 114 1/3 innings for the Padres in 2022. He pitched to contact much of the time, recording 91 strikeouts while walking 35 batters. It was Clevinger’s first season back after he missed all of 2021 following Tommy John surgery.

Clevinger posted a 2.71 ERA in 21 starts in 2019 and a 3.02 ERA in eight starts in 2020.

Clevinger projects to fill a slot in the back end of the White Sox’s rotation as Chicago appears set to let right-hander Johnny Cueto leave in free agency.
