(670 The Score) After encountering injury adversity, the White Sox have added starting pitching depth.
Right-hander Johnny Cueto is in agreement to join the White Sox on a minor league deal, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported late Monday night. The contract will be worth $4.2 million, prorated for days spent in the big leagues, Passan reported. The deal is still pending Cueto passing a physical.
Cueto, 36, posted a 4.08 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 22 appearances, including 21 starts, for the Giants last season. Once he’s in form and has fully built up his arm strength, he’ll have the chance to fill a back-end rotation slot for the White Sox, who have lost ace Lance Lynn for at least two months due to a knee injury that will require surgery. If someone else fills the open slot, Cueto could be used as a long reliever out of the bullpen.
The veteran Cueto has a 3.45 ERA in his 14-year MLB career.
