(670 The Score) The White Sox’s last-ditch hopes of rallying in the AL Central were essentially crushed with a loss Tuesday, and third baseman Yoan Moncada started the game Wednesday evening as if there was little to play for.
Moncada had a really lackadaisical first inning. On the second batter of the game, Moncada showed no urgency to charge a grounder or throw to first base in timely fashion, which allowed speedy Guardians shortstop Amed Rosario to leg out an infield single to give Cleveland a two-on, no-out situation. With the bases loaded later with one out, Moncada fielded a potential inning-ending double-play ball and stepped on third base for an out, only to then short hop a throw to first baseman Jose Abreu for an error, giving the Guardians a 1-0 lead. Cleveland extended that lead to 2-0 on another infield single shortly after.
Moncada also grounded out in the bottom of the first. His poor start Wednesday came one night after he failed to cover third base as the Guardians stole a base in the 11th inning of an eventual 10-7 win.
The White Sox went on to lose 8-2 to the Guardians on Wednesday.
