(670 The Score) One member of the White Sox’s starting left side of the infield is nearing a return from injury, while the other is further behind.

Shortstop Tim Anderson will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, general manager Rick Hahn said Thursday. Anderson has been sidelined since April 10 with a sprained left knee, but if all goes well on his rehab stint, he should return to the big league club soon.

“We’re getting close,” Hahn said.

Anderson is hitting .298 with a .731 OPS in 11 games this season, and he has long been the engine that drives the White Sox’s offense.

Third baseman Yoan Moncada is “progressing steadily” from a back issue, but his return isn’t imminent, Hahn said. In shedding new information on Moncada’s ailing back, Hahn explained that Moncada had a disc that was inflamed, which was “basically impinging upon a nerve in his lower back.”

Moncada has been increasing his physical activity in recent days, and the team’s hope is he can make further progress over the next seven to eight days and then perhaps embark on a rehab assignment afterward, Hahn said. Moncada was off to a hot start, hitting .308 with an .889 OPS in nine games before getting hurt. He hasn’t played since April 9.

Hahn also shared injury updates on a pair of White Sox relievers. Lefty Garrett Crochet will join the White Sox by Friday to undergo a medical checkup as he’s in the final stages of rehab from Tommy John surgery, which he had in 2022. Crochet could begin a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend, Hahn said.

Closer Liam Hendriks will join the club sometime next week when the White Sox host the Twins, a series that gets going Tuesday at Guaranteed Rate Field. He'll undergo a medical evaluation after his battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Hendriks recently announced he was cancer-free.

Hendriks could start a rehab assignment as soon as the end of next week, Hahn said.
