(670 The Score) The White Sox won't consider former manager Ozzie Guillen as a candidate to lead the team again, general manager Rick Hahn said Monday morning after the team let go of manager Rick Renteria.
Guillen is the only potential candidate the White Sox will publicly rule out, Hahn said. White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf called Guillen on Monday morning and informed him of the team's decision.
The 56-year-old Guillen managed the White Sox from 2004-'11, going 678-617 and leading them to a World Series title in 2005. His tenure as manager ended after the 2011 season following clashes with the front office. Guillen has been vocal about his desire to manage in MLB again, including in an interview on 670 The Score last week.
"Jerry (Reinsdorf), (team president Kenny Williams) and I have spent a lot of time thinking this through in terms of the fit going forward," Hahn said.
"We didn't feel like Ozzie would be the right fit."
Guillen last managed in 2012 with the Marlins, who acquired him from the White Sox through a trade after the 2011 season. He was 69-93 in his lone season in Miami.
Guillen has been welcomed back into good graces with the White Sox organization since his departure after 2011. He's a frequent presence at Guaranteed Rate Field, including through his role as an analyst with NBC Sports Chicago, the team's flagship television network.
Hahn declined to discuss candidates involved in the White Sox's search and added the team won't be publicly revealing who it interviews.
The White Sox are seeking a manager who has experience winning in the playoffs, Hahn said, while adding managing experience is something the team views as "ideal" but not a prerequisite.
The White Sox were 35-25 in the 60-game regular season of 2020, earning their first postseason appearance since 2008. They lost to the Athletics in the best-of-three wild-card round, dropping the final two games at Oakland.
"Quite frankly, we should be viewed as a very desirable landing spot for a manager," Hahn said.
"We're looking for a right fit that can take us to that next step."
