Report: Nets star Kevin Durant requests trade out of Brooklyn

(WFAN) Kyrie Irving has opted back into his deal with the Nets, but in a shocking development, superstar Kevin Durant wants out of Brooklyn.

Durant on Thursday requested a trade just hours before free agency was set to open in the evening, according to multiple reports, potentially leading to a complete destruction of the super-team that the Nets formed three years ago.

The Nets signed Durant and Irving in summer 2019, then traded for star guard James Harden in January 2021. Harden was already traded away this past season. Irving opted in after rumors of him potentially being open to a sign-and-trade, and now the team’s best player wants out.

Durant's preferred destination is the Phoenix Suns, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported. The Miami Heat have also been rumored as a potential suitor.

Since Irving and Durant joined them in 2019, the Nets have won just one playoff series. Now, the soon-to-be 34-year-old Durant is looking for a change to chase another title as he approaches what will likely be the final years of his career. Durant is a 12-time All-Star who averaged 29.9 points last season.
