(WBEN) Former Buffalo Bills star running back O.J. Simpson, who famously stood trial for the murders of his former wife and her friend, has died at the age of 76.

Simpson's family made the announcement in a post on X on Thursday morning.

Simpson had reportedly been undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

He became a household name in Buffalo and beyond as a star running back in the 1960s and 1970s, when he spent nine years with the Bills. In 1973, he became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, winning league MVP.

Simpson was arrested and charged in 1994 with the murder of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. Both the chase leading up to his arrest and lengthy trial were highly publicized. Simpson was controversially acquitted of the murders but found liable for their deaths in a civil suit.
