While the Big Ten won’t play football this fall, there remains the potential of winter ball.

The conference is looking at indoor stadiums in Indianapolis, St. Louis, Detroit, Minneapolis and Syracuse, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Earlier in August, the Big Ten announced it wouldn't hold fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, Penn State coach James Franklin expressed frustration with the Big Ten postponing fall sports.

“When the decision was actually being made, it caught a lot of people off guard,” Franklin said.  “At that time, we felt things were going pretty good.  We felt we were going to make this thing work, and things changed quickly.”

While Franklin said he doesn’t necessarily disagree with the move, he wasn’t happy about the announcement being so sudden.

“I don’t necessarily have an issue with the decision, but I have an issue with the process and an issue with the timing," he said. "It was challenging to keep getting up in front of my team and getting up in front of my parents and not having answers to their questions. If we were going to make the decision to delay the season, we should have taken the time to have all the answers for what that’s going to mean for eligibility, scholarships, the next opportunity to play. What does that mean to roster management and incoming recruits?”

A winter season would allow the conference to complete its games before the NFL Draft, which is held in April. A spring schedule was also floated as a possibility.
