(RADIO.COM Sports) There may not be an NFL Scouting Combine, but there's still plenty of draft chatter happening this time of year — most notably around BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.
Wilson has gained some buzz in recent weeks, with some pundits and mock drafts ranking him behind Clemson's Trevor Lawrence as the No. 2 quarterback in the draft.
While free agency and trades could still shape much of the quarterback outlook, the Jets, Falcons, Lions and Panthers are all teams drafting in the top 10 that could need one. Not to mention other teams like the 49ers, Texans and even the Patriots could find themselves in a position in which they make a trade into the top 10 for a quarterback as well.
So what makes Wilson such an attractive prospect? Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus joined Bull & Fox on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland and explained just that, including how Wilson is just as goof, if not better, than Lawrence in some ways.
“If you just go based off this past season alone, he had more impressive throws on tape,” Renner said. “Like the number of ‘NFL throws’ — throws that are difficult, downfield, on a line that you have to make in the league to play, he had more this year than Lawrence.”
Renner added that Wilson comes with more question marks than Lawrence though.
“There’s a reason it is universally agreed upon (Lawrence) is the No. 1 pick ever since he played as a freshman and it’s because he has no weaknesses to his game,” Renner said. “Wilson, (he) played behind a ridiculous offensive line, had all day, competition level wasn’t great, wasn’t facing much pressure. So, there are question marks.
“But just in terms of pure where the ball (needed) to go to where it went perspective, he was just as good as Trevor Lawrence this year. So the hype is warranted with him, in my opinion.”
