(AUDACY) Just as the New York Yankees seem to be turning a corner, the team has been struck by COVID-19 yet again.
Newly acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo tested positive for COVID-19 following the game Saturday and was placed on the COVID-IL, manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday. Rizzo is the fourth Yankees player to test positive this week, joining ace Gerrit Cole, left-hander Jordan Montgomery and catcher Gary Sanchez.
The left-handed slugger Rizzo, who also turned 32 on Sunday, has been a sparkplug for the Bombers since the Chicago Cubs traded him to New York on July 29. In nine games with the Yankees, Rizzo has a slash line of .281/.400/.963 with three home runs, six RBIs and eight runs. The Yankees also have gone 8-1 since Rizzo joined the team.
Rizzo revealed back in June that he hadn't been vaccinated and was “taking some more time to see the data." On Sunday, Boone wouldn't say whether Rizzo has been vaccinated since then.
Boone did disclose that Rizzo was experiencing some mild symptoms.
With Rizzo out, the Yankees activated first baseman Luke Voit, whom they were looking to trade after acquiring Rizzo, prior to the game Sunday. It's likely Voit will fill in for Rizzo until he returns from the COVID IL.
