Encarnacion worked with former MLB stars Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz on the COVID-19 Dominican Republic Initiative through the Pedro Martinez Foundation, the White Sox said. The initiative encouraged more than 40 MLB players from the Dominican Republic to donate funds for life-saving supplies such as ventilators, face masks, cleaning supplies and food, the team said in a news release.
There are at least 8,200 confirmed coronavirus cases in the Dominican Republic and at least 345 deaths resulting from it.
Encarnacion conducted his work as the MLB season remains suspended. The league is hoping to return to action this summer, though all plans at this time remain contingencies in need of clearance from public health officials.
