Chicago will designate Alonso for assignment, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported Thursday afternoon. Acquire by the White Sox in a trade with the Indians in mid-December, the 32-year-old Alonso has struggled mightily, hitting .178 with seven homers, 27 RBIs and a .576 OPS in 67 games.
Alonso's poor performance was in contrast to the fanfare that surrounded his acquisition, though that buzz didn't stem from his skills. Alonso is the brother-in-law of Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who at the time in mid-December was an unsigned sought-after free agent whom the White Sox were heavily pursuing.
The White Sox recently called up touted prospect Zack Collins, who's primarily a catcher but who can also play first base and fill the designated hitter role.
