Third baseman Yoan Moncada and the White Sox have agreed to a five-year, $70-million contract extension that also includes a $25-million team option for 2025, the team announced Friday morning. News of deal with first reported by Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic on Thursday.
Moncada will receive $65 million over the first five years on the contract, and the team option of $25 million for 2025 could bring the total value of the deal to $90 million over six years. Moncada had been on track to become a free agent after the 2023 season, meaning the White Sox bought out two of his free agency years.
Moncada had a breakout 2019 season, hitting .315 with 25 homers, 79 RBIs and a .915 OPS in 132 games.
Moncada's extension is the latest in a long line of them for the White Sox, who have become industry leaders in locking down their youngsters early. Left fielder Eloy Jimenez, center fielder Luis Robert and reliever Aaron Bummer are three other young White Sox players to sign long-term extensions in the past 12 or so months. Shortstop Tim Anderson also did so back in March 2017.
