Sanchez: 'Bad Call' To Play In Rain Quagmire

CHICAGO (670 The Score) -- While he showcased his fun-loving demeanor by making mud angels and giving himself a Gatorade shower in the already-pouring rain, White Sox infielder Yolmer Sanchez wasn't pleased that his team and the Royals were forced to play in adverse weather conditions that made for an ultra-sloppy playing field at Guaranteed Rate Field on Monday evening.

Shortly after the teams waited out a 2-hour, 55-minute initial delay by picking play back up shortly after 5:30 p.m., an already steady rain turned into a downpour.

"It was awful, to be honest," Sanchez said Tuesday. "I never have seen a baseball game under those conditions. That was a really bad call. I don't like to (complain), but that was a bad call yesterday. Someone could get hurt. It could happen batting, running -- and they knew it was supposed to rain."

Sanchez hit an RBI single as the bottom of the fifth was played, tying the game at 1-1. Play was again soon halted, then the contest was suspended around 6:45 p.m. The suspended game was picked back up late Tuesday afternoon before the originally scheduled game was to be played later in the evening.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, White Sox groundskeeper Roger Bossard explained that crew chief Bill Miller made the "right call" in trying to squeeze the fifth inning in, saying that a storm cell "came out of nowhere" when the expectation was a break in the rain was coming. Had a team been holding the lead through five innings, the game could've become official.

Sanchez was nonplussed.

"You are going to try and play one inning and stop the game 15 minutes later, that was bad," Sanchez said. "You are not going to do that. If you are going to play, you play. We are not trying to just get a base hit. Otherwise, stop the game. Just a bad call."

The situation wasn't explained well to the players, Sanchez said.

"The field was really bad," Sanchez said. "I got a base hit, and (James) McCann had to try to go from second to home and the base was really slippery. He could easily get hurt and (strain) a hammy or something. The last thing I will say again is it was a bad call."
