No players from the Browns have opted out of the season as of Tuesday evening according to the NFL’s daily transaction report.
“While the offseason and training camp are different this year, we are proud of what our players and coaches accomplished virtually and look forward to carrying that positive momentum into this important next stage of preparation for the 2020 season,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “We are excited that our players are returning to the building this week and are eager to work with them in person, while continuing to closely follow all of the new protocols and processes in place that are focused on our entire team’s health, safety and overall well-being.”
While veterans checked in and received the first of three COVID-19 tests they will take over the first four days, quarterback Baker Mayfield, the rookies and injured players stepped into the training facility for the first time this year.
Once players have tested negative three consecutive times, they will be cleared to enter the facility for physicals Saturday or Sunday.
Anyone designated Tier 1 or Tier 2 will be tested daily for the first 14 days and then tested every other day under league protocols.
The NFL and NFLPA approved the Browns’ Infectious Disease Emergency Response plan on Monday.
While players go through the COVID-19 testing intake protocols, they will participate in meetings via video conference, as they did throughout the offseason program.
The ‘Acclimation Period’ begins Monday August 3 and will include strength and conditioning work in the weight room as well as on the field. Walkthroughs are also permitted during this time.
The first full-team practice is scheduled to take place Friday, August 14 and the first full padded practice on Monday, August 17.
As expected, the preseason has been cancelled.
The Browns continue to hold out hope they will be able to host some fans at FirstEnergy Stadium this season and are still finalizing stadium protocols and determining capacity.
