Indians place Carlos Carrasco on injured list with blood condition

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Indians placed Carlos Carrasco on the 10-day injured list due to a non-baseball medical condition.

Carrasco, 32, was diagnosed with a blood condition after feeling lethargic for weeks. The right-hander will step away from baseball activities so doctors can gather as much information as possible. The Indians do expect him to return to the team this season.

“We have to err on the side of being respectful to Carlos and his family,” Francona said. “When Carlos is comfortable talking more, he will. But that is strictly when he is comfortable doing that. He had been feeling sluggish, and because he’s had some heart issues in the past, he had some blood tests that led to this conclusion.”

Carrasco is 4-6 with a 4.98 ERA in 12 starts this year. The Indians signed him to a contract extension in the offseason. He was scheduled to start in Wednesday night's matchup with the Twins. Instead, the Indians added two relievers in hopes of getting by without their veteran starter.

The Indians optioned outfielder Greg Allen to Triple-A Columbus and recalled Jon Edwards and Nick Goody. Edwards has a 2.45 ERA in eight appearances for the Indians this season. Goody has spent the entire 2019 season in Columbus. He appeared in 12 games for the Tribe in 2018, posting a 6.94 ERA.

Carrasco going down is a huge loss for the Indians, who are already without starters Mike Clevinger and Corey Kluber.
