VIEW FROM NEW YORK: Bucs could make same mistake on Baker Mayfield that Giants did with Daniel Jones

Baker Mayfield was distraught after his late interception sealed the Lions’ win to advance to their first NFC title game in over 30 years, but overall, his performance in the postseason was widely praised.

Mayfield has bounced around the league during his NFL career, but this year led the Buccaneers into the postseason and helped rout the defending conference champion Eagles in the Wild Card round. Now, the Bucs will have to make a decision regarding Mayfield’s future.

And C-Mac sees it going just how it did with Daniel Jones and the Giants.

“Baker Mayfield played well…but if you look at the correlation and similarities between this season with Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers and Daniel Jones and the Giants two years ago, there’s a lot in common,” C-Mac said. “It could end the same way, with Baker Mayfield getting $40 million a year in a new contract, which to me is asinine.

“He beat an Eagles team that didn’t want to be there, then threw for 350 yards against a Lions team where they had the lead and were dominating the football game…for anybody who believes the nonsense the Giants are trying to sell you in believing in Daniel Jones, do you think the Buccaneers honestly believe that Baker Mayfield is worth $40 million, or he is their only option moving forward?”

C-Mac is beyond ready to move on from Jones, just one year after Big Blue signed him to a four-year, $160 million deal. He is convinced that Bucs fans will be in the same boat this time next season if Mayfield is signed to a big contract off of this season’s accomplishments.

“Both teams entered the season with no expectations, and had a nice season,” C-Mac said. “They sneak into the playoffs, win a first-round playoff game.”
