PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Ben Roethlisberger was making flash cards with his daughter to help him study. The 18=year veteran Steelers quarterback said it’s a high percentage of new, calling it a challenge to learn the new terminology and offense. All at age 39.

So what say Matt Canada?

“It’s the easiest offense in America, in my opinion,” Canada said.  “I’ve always said that. Huge compliment to Ben, he’s done this a long time and we have made some changes in how we call things in the system.”

Canada, and head coach Mike Tomlin for that matter, do not expect any issues when the season starts in a month and a half.

There are more shifts in the 2021 offense as Canada says a lot of teams do it to gain an advantage.  It’s up to them to see how fast they push it, how much no-huddle, how much under center.  All of those variables will likely play out over the season based on degrees of success.

“I feel like they’ve grasped them very well,” Canada said.  “Again, I look at Ben and the time he’s played and all the time he’s had to put in, knowing his system. The tweaks on the run game and things are there and he’s done a great job and worked really hard and (has) been a great leader for the young guys too. It’s been great.”

Roethlisberger and the other quarterbacks are constantly looking at their wristbands early on during training camp.  Ben said new isn’t always bad, it’s just new.

“Football is football,” Canada said.  “There’s not that many plays out there. There are some differences in how we’re calling it and Ben’s worked very hard to be comfortable with it. We’re trying to find ways to get guys in certain spots, but it’s going to look very similar to how it’s always looked.”

“We’re going to be the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
